Mobi-Rec is a mobile recreation vehicle designed to increase opportunities for youth to participate in safe, quality, structured play and recreation in areas where services are not available. It was created in 2013 by graduates of the Riley Institute at Furman’s Diversity Leaders Initiative, in partnership with the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Department. The creators recognized that with over 30% of Greenville County youth being overweight or obese, there was a need to provide more physical activity opportunities for children.
Since its launch in 2013, Mobi-Rec has made hundreds of stops around Greenville at various locations including parks, community centers, schools, churches, and apartment complexes. In 2016 alone, Mobi-Rec completed 182 visits – almost double its goal for the year.
