Residents of a West Greenville neighborhood got a new point of access this month with the opening of Mill Village Market!
The storefront is an extension of the growing food access work at Mill Village Ministries; what began with Mill Village Farms extended into a mobile market that already stops two locations on Saturdays during the growing season. Now the new storefront will be open year round in the Village of West Greenville, a walkable and convenient location to the Brandon, Woodside, Brutontown and other communities.
The storefront, like the mobile market, features pricing intended to make foods affordable for area residents. Like a traditional neighborhood grocery, it has a little of everything. Produce comes from Mill Village Farms and other sources as needed, and there are also items like soups, canned vegetables, pastas, milk, snacks, drinks and beer.
A special rotating section will feature food creations from entrepreneurs who have been supported by Mill Village partner Nasha Lending; this includes local indulgences such as Banana Manna baked goods.
Other options for food in the immediate vicinity currently include a handful of restaurants and just as many convenience stores – fresh produce is scarce. Mill Village plans to shape its offerings in response to what neighbors want and need, and will encourage their participation.
A large amount of the store’s floor space is devoted to seating in the hopes that the community will see the market as a gathering space. Plans for the entire building include a co-work space that will be an affordable spot for entrepreneurs, which means more exciting developments are to come!
