The Dogwood Café at Pelham Medical Center (PMC) has made it easier for guests, visitors and employees to make healthy choices. PMC has partnered with LiveWell Greenville to find and label dozens of its healthiest menu items through the LiveWell on the Menu program.
The change is par for the course at PMC, which has been recognized for taking an interest in creative ways to improve health through food offerings. The center received a LiveWell at Work Award this year in honor of its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle among staff.
The café uses food grown in an on-site garden that is maintained by employees, and vending machine prices have been adjusted to make healthy choices more accessible. Outside, a new half-mile fitness walking trail complements the choices that have improved healthy food access.
Now, bright green letters alert Dogwood Café customers – and patients and visitors who order from their rooms – to healthy options on the menus. An active participant on LiveWell’s At Mealtime workgroup, PMC worked with LiveWell’s volunteer dieticians to analyze several breakfast, lunch and snack items. They identified the healthy options that were low in fat, calories, sugar and sodium. LiveWell on the Menu also highlights the whole grains fruits, and vegetables that are always a great choice. Drinks including milk, plain water, and 100% juice are also included.
Diet is an important part of health at work and while dealing with ailments that find us at the hospital as patients or visitors. Through LiveWell on the Menu at Dogwood Café, people can trust that they’re making healthy choices with just a quick scan of the menu. LiveWell is excited about this ongoing partnership and congratulates Dogwood Café on making the healthy choice the easy choice.
