For Fun
LiveWell Greenville supports the growth and maintenance of our public parks and trails systems in order to increase accessibility to safe, convenient places to be active.
Our Goal
Residents have clean, safe and convenient parks with multiple options for moderate to vigorous physical activity
The Challenge
Parks and open spaces are on the rise in Greenville County, offering residents a plethora of free opportunities to live active lives. Baseball fields, basketball courts, pools, playgrounds and walking trails and other facilities offer residents a variety of activities to engage in exercise that people enjoy. However, over half (54%) of Greenville County residents do not engage in regular moderate physical activity, which is recommended to maintain good health (SCDHEC). Despite the system of parks and open spaces, some residents still do not have access to safe, convenient places to play and exercise or they are not aware of the facilities close to home or work.
How will we increase access to parks and trails to help people LiveWell?
- Increase safety through Park Watch programs
LiveWell Greenville will partner with neighborhood residents to encourage them monitor park use and activity and report issues that compromise park safety to local park officials and law enforcement.
Partners: Neighborhood residents, Municipal Park Departments, Greenville Rec, local law enforcement
- Increase access to basic recreation facilities through the development of a model Complete Parks policy
LiveWell Greenville aims to work with local parks and recreation providers to develop a Complete Parks policy, similar to that of Complete Streets, and will implement action toward gaining local commitment to future park investments that involve Complete Parks.
Partners: Greenville Rec, Municipal Park Departments, local elected leaders and appointed commissioners, neighborhood residents, LiveWell Greenville partners
- Increase accessibility to local parks
Building on the well-known Safe Routes to School concept, LiveWell Greenville will implement Safe Routes to Parks initiatives to increase accessibility to parks, trails and greenspaces by working with local neighborhood residents, parks and recreation providers, transportation planners and traffic engineers to identify safe routes to areas where residents can play and be active. LiveWell Greenville will also encourage park and recreation providers to pursue policies that support smoke-free parks.
Partners: Neighborhood Associations, Greenville Rec, Municipal Park Departments, transportation planners and traffic engineers, and elected leaders
