Before and After School

LiveWell Greenville supports after school and child care providers in making healthy choices the easy choices for children and families served by center programs.

Our Goals

  • Fresh, healthy foods served in child care centers and after school programs
  • Kids are more physically active in child care centers and after school programs
  • Centers with healthy policies and procedures are recognized as achieving a LiveWell Greenville Healthy Provider designation

The Challenge

It is widely known that good nutrition and physical activity is important to the development of young children, but many providers may lack the knowledge and skills to make menu and curriculum changes within child care and after school centers.  Some providers may perceive that switching to healthier foods is more costly and that children in their care will not eat healthier options.  For centers that wish to make changes, but don’t know where to start, there are few additional funds available to support technical assistance, training and tools for making changes.  While there is an emerging trend in parents seeking healthier environments for child care, many centers may ultimately need incentives to make changes.

How will child care centers help children and families LiveWell?

  • More child care providers serve healthy meals and snacks and offer regular structured physical activity in licenced child care centers

LiveWell Greenville partners will support, through advocacy and training support, a joint effort between South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Department of Social Services to provide technical assistance and incentives to licenced child care centers.

Partners:  SCDHEC, DSS, Child Care Association, Upstate Child Care Resource and Referral, Safe Kids Upstate, local child care providers

  • More after school providers serve healthy meals and snacks and offer regular structured physical activity in non-licenced after school programs

LiveWell Greenville partners will provide technical assistance and training to after school providers seeking to serve healthy meals and snacks to children and provide structured physical activity every day through a year-long assessment, training and implementation program.  Using the LiveWell Greenville Healthy After School Provider
Toolkit, providers will asses their current policies, practices and curricula related to healthy meals and snacks as well as regular physical activity.  LiveWell Greenville partners will provide technical assistance and training on menu planning, purchasing and daily activity planning as well as support for implementation over a one-year period.  Providers will assess progress and be recognized as a LiveWell Greenville Healthy Provider if goals are met.
